Out of Bounds: Zakiya Collier on “Theaster Gates: Young Lords and Their Traces”

Out of Bounds: Zakiya Collier on “Theaster Gates: Young Lords and Their Traces”

As Gates’ survey exhibition explores new modes of appreciating and sharing collective knowledge, Collier will facilitate a dialogue about the survival of community memory through collective archiving practices and the gravity of being entrusted with materials holding the stories of our loved ones. Examining the differences between keeping and holding ancestral and contemporary memories, participants will have an opportunity to share stories about their own collections and co-create strategies to care for their objects and honor the beauty of the lives therein.

Out of Bounds is a new series of gallery-based talks, readings, performances, and more that seeks to expand the ways we think about what’s on display in the New Museum galleries. Bringing together artists, specialists, and workers from fields beyond the art world, these engagements expand on themes found in the artworks and exhibitions on view.
